Aquaculture platforms prioritise corrosion resistance, work access, washdown, load from baskets/gear, biofouling, fuel/equipment safety and often remote maintainability. Environmental and lease conditions can be as important as structure.

What changes for aquaculture platforms

Aquaculture structures are production infrastructure. They are worked daily, loaded by stock handling and feed systems, exposed continuously, and expected to survive weather events without losing containment. Downtime has a direct biological and financial cost.

They are also usually part of a permitted operation, so the structure sits inside a licensing and environmental framework that constrains where it can be, how it is anchored and how it is decommissioned.

Questions to settle before you specify

  • What operations happen on the structure — feeding, grading, harvesting, maintenance — and what plant and loads does each bring?
  • What is the site exposure, and what is the design event the moorings must survive?
  • How is the mooring system inspected, tensioned and replaced in service?
  • What biofouling accumulates, and how is it managed without damaging the structure?
  • What does decommissioning and removal involve at end of life?

What to put in the RFQ

  • Operational load cases for each activity carried out on the structure.
  • Mooring design basis with the environmental data it was derived from.
  • Inspection and replacement regime for mooring and connection components.
  • Materials and coatings suited to continuous immersion and fouling management.
  • Removal and reinstatement obligations, if the licence imposes them.

Where aquaculture structures go wrong

  • Moorings sized for the average condition rather than the design event.
  • Connection hardware that cannot be inspected without stopping production.
  • Fouling management that degrades the structure it is meant to protect.
  • No allowance in the design for the plant used during harvest.

What usually fails in a storm?

Connections and mooring components far more often than floats. Those are the items that see cyclic load, so they are the items whose inspection regime matters.

Does the structure need approval as well as the farming licence?

Commonly yes — the licence to operate and the permission to place a structure in the waterway are usually separate matters. Confirm both with the relevant agencies before ordering.
