Sailing clubs often need a dual-use system: low freeboard for dinghies plus a stronger section for RIBs/rescue boats.

What changes for a sailing club facility

A club pontoon is a public-ish facility operated by volunteers on a constrained budget, used hardest on the days it matters most. Peak load is a race day with many small craft arriving at once, not a single boat sitting quietly alongside.

The users are also different. Dinghy sailors, juniors and coaches board from the water, drag boats across the deck, and stand in numbers along the edge. That drives freeboard, edge detail, surface and crowd loading more than vessel displacement does.

Questions to settle before you specify

  • What is the peak simultaneous use — how many craft and how many people at once?
  • What craft types must be launched and recovered, and from which side?
  • What freeboard suits boarding a dinghy, as opposed to boarding a keelboat?
  • Are juniors and less mobile members using the facility, and what does that mean for edges, rails and gradient?
  • Who maintains it, with what budget and what skills, once the grant that funded it is spent?

What to put in the RFQ

  • Crowd loading basis and the design assumption for simultaneous use.
  • Freeboard at the craft-boarding positions, stated as a figure.
  • Deck surface with wet slip resistance and a defined replacement path.
  • Damage-tolerant edge detail and replaceable components in the areas that take the most abuse.
  • A maintenance schedule a volunteer committee can actually follow.

Where club facilities go wrong

  • Designed around one vessel type when the club runs several.
  • Freeboard set for adult keelboat access, leaving junior sailors climbing.
  • Components that can only be replaced by the original manufacturer.
  • No handover pack, so the knowledge leaves when the committee changes.

Questions buyers ask

Should a club buy new or extend the existing facility?

That depends on the condition and certification of what exists. An inspection and an engineering assessment of the current structure should precede the decision, because extending a structure that is near the end of its life transfers the problem rather than solving it.

Who signs off a club facility?

It depends on the waterway, the land tenure and the level of public access. Because clubs often sit on leased or Crown land, confirm the approval path with the relevant authority before committing funds.
