Pontoons for Sailing Yachts

A yacht berth needs deep-water access, suitable fender height, boarding alignment, shore power and mooring geometry that does not foul stanchions, lifelines or transom equipment.

Large cruising yachts can place significant loads on a small residential pontoon in gusts. Specify displacement and projected windage, not only LOA. Consider mast clearance from trees, powerlines and bridge structures during approach.

What changes for a sailing yacht berth

A sailing yacht is a high-windage, deep-draught vessel with a rig that punishes poor clearance. The pontoon has to hold a vessel whose sail area keeps working on it long after the engine is off, and it has to do so without the rig contacting anything above or beside it.

Draught is the other constraint. A berth that suits a motor cruiser can be unusable for a keelboat at the bottom of the tide, and grounding a fin keel against a hard bed is a different failure from nudging a planing hull.

Questions to settle before you specify

  • What is the vessel's draught, and what is the charted and surveyed depth at the berth at the lowest expected water level?
  • What is the windage area with the boom, dodger and any cover in place, and from which direction does the prevailing wind load it?
  • Is there any overhead constraint — power lines, bridges, structures — that the rig must clear on the approach as well as at rest?
  • How will mooring lines be led, and do the cleat positions suit a vessel that surges rather than sits still?
  • Does the berth suit single-handed arrival, which is when most damage happens?

What to put in the RFQ

  • The design vessel's displacement, length, beam, draught and windage area as stated figures.
  • Depth at the berth referenced to a stated datum, and who verified it.
  • Mooring hardware type, position and design load, with the load path down into the structure.
  • Fendering appropriate to a hull that heels and rolls against the structure.
  • Restraint that holds position under sustained wind load, not just under a short gust.

Where yacht berths go wrong

  • Depth assessed at the wrong water level, so the boat sits on the bottom a few days a month.
  • Cleats placed for the builder's module rather than for the boat's actual line leads.
  • Windage ignored in restraint design because only displacement was considered.
  • Fendering that suits a vertical topside but not a heeling hull.

Questions buyers ask

Can one pontoon suit both a yacht and a motor cruiser?

Often yes, but the design has to be set by the more demanding case in each respect: usually the yacht for draught and windage, the motor cruiser for displacement and freeboard at the boarding point.

What matters more, length or displacement?

Displacement and windage drive the loads. Length mainly drives the geometry — how much structure the vessel needs alongside and where the lines land.
