Piles
Design involves:
- material: steel, concrete, timber, FRP or specialist systems
- diameter/section
- wall thickness
- corrosion allowance/coating
- embedment
- lateral capacity
- soil strength
- pile spacing
- water-level range
- wave/current/wind actions
- pile-guide clearance and wear
Strut systems
Useful where piles are undesirable or site geometry suits a shore-connected articulated restraint. Verify horizontal force path into the bank/abutment and range of vertical movement.
Cables/chains/deadweights
Can avoid piling but create swing and larger underwater footprints. Chain wear, anchor inspection and seabed environmental impact need consideration.
Buyer questions
- Who designs the pile or anchor, the pontoon builder or a separate engineer?
- Is geotechnical data required?
- Is pile driving refusal a variation?
- What happens if rock is encountered?
- Is pile extraction/removal included at end of life?
- Are guide pads replaceable?
- What is the maximum permitted water level before the guide can disengage?
