Options

Hardwood

Premium appearance and familiar repair methods, but requires maintenance and correct species/grade.

Composite/WPC

Low splinter risk and uniform appearance. Verify heat, expansion, slip resistance and fixing method.

FRP grating

Excellent drainage and corrosion resistance. Common in public/industrial systems. Verify load span, resin/fire/UV properties and heel-friendly mesh where public use is expected.

Aluminium mesh/treadplate

Durable and structural. Can become hot and may be noisy. Mesh provides drainage.

Concrete

Robust and high mass. Common on heavy commercial systems.

Marine carpet

Comfortable but can retain contamination and complicate inspection.

Buyer specification

Require wet slip resistance appropriate to the application, drainage, replaceable panels where utilities run below deck and no trip edges at interfaces.

Decking is a wear item with a safety function

Deck surface is the part of a pontoon that people touch, and the part that degrades where they walk. It has to grip when wet, survive UV and salt, drain, stay cool enough to stand on, and be replaceable without dismantling the structure.

Every material trades those properties differently, and the right answer depends on the users and the exposure rather than on fashion.

Questions to settle before you specify

  • Who uses the surface — bare feet, wet feet, work boots, wheels, trolleys?
  • How hot does it get in direct sun, and is that acceptable for the users?
  • How does water leave the deck, and where does it go?
  • How is a damaged or worn panel replaced, and can it be done in isolation?
  • What does the surface look like after five years of the site's actual exposure?

What to put in the RFQ

  • Material, fixing method and the wet slip performance claimed, with its basis.
  • Panel or board size and the replacement procedure for a single unit.
  • Drainage detail and gap dimensions.
  • Fixing material and isolation from the supporting structure.
  • Expected service life and what the warranty covers.

Where decking choices go wrong

  • Selected on appearance, then found to be slippery when wet or too hot underfoot.
  • Fixed in a way that requires lifting whole sections to replace one damaged board.
  • Gaps sized so that keys, phones and fittings disappear through them.
  • Fasteners that corrode into the substrate and cannot be removed cleanly.
  • A surface that suits adults in shoes on a facility used by children with bare feet.

Questions buyers ask

Which decking material lasts longest?

Service life depends as much on exposure, fixing and maintenance as on the material itself. Ask for the expected life at your exposure, what maintenance that assumes, and what the warranty actually covers.

Can decking be replaced later?

It should be able to be, and that is worth confirming before purchase. Ask specifically how a single damaged panel is replaced, because the answer differs sharply between systems.
