Include vibration, torque, suspended hose reactions, lifting, skid/push loads, access, guarding and rescue. Determine whether the floating platform is a domestic commercial vessel under the national system.
What changes for industrial and work platforms
An industrial pontoon carries equipment, not lifestyle. The load is often concentrated, sometimes moving, and frequently attached to something that pulls — a pump, a hose run, a crane, a winch, a spud leg. The governing load case is rarely a person standing on the deck.
These structures also live under a workplace safety regime. Access, guarding, working at height over water, rescue and isolation are design inputs, not afterthoughts.
Questions to settle before you specify
- What equipment sits on the platform, what does it weigh, and where does it sit?
- What forces does that equipment apply — thrust, torque, vibration, line pull — and in which directions?
- What are the access, guarding and fall-prevention requirements for the people who work on it?
- How is the platform moved, deployed and recovered, and by what plant?
- What happens if the site condition changes — water level, current, debris load?
What to put in the RFQ
- Equipment schedule with masses, footprints and applied forces.
- Deck point-load capacity and the tie-down arrangement for each item.
- Access, guarding and edge-protection requirements referenced to the applicable standard.
- Transport, deployment and recovery method with the plant required.
- Inspection regime suited to an asset under a workplace safety duty.
Where industrial platforms go wrong
- Sized on total mass, ignoring the point loads under equipment feet.
- Line pull or thrust omitted, so restraint is undersized in service.
- Access and guarding added after the design is fixed, compromising both.
- No inspection regime, so degradation is found during an incident.
Questions buyers ask
Is an industrial pontoon a structure or a vessel?
It depends on how it is used and moved. Platforms that are crewed, propelled or carry people in certain ways can fall under vessel regimes; fixed working platforms may be treated as structures. Confirm the classification early, because it changes the approval and certification path entirely.
Can a recreational pontoon be used for light industrial work?
Only if it is assessed for the actual loads and the workplace safety requirements. Recreational products are designed for people and personal effects, not for equipment loads and applied forces.
