Public ramp pontoons experience trailer-boat impact, crowd loads, vandalism, grounding, waves and repeated wet/dry cycles.
Concrete can provide high stability and attenuation, while HDPE/aluminium can reduce weight and simplify deployment. The correct choice depends on ramp geometry and exposure. Include ladders, non-slip deck, robust fendering and replaceable high-wear components.
What changes for a boat ramp pontoon
A courtesy pontoon beside a ramp exists to let one person hold a boat while another parks the vehicle. It is public, unsupervised, used by people of widely varying skill, and hit regularly — often by trailer boats arriving faster than intended.
It also sits in the worst part of the site. Ramps are usually in shallow water with a steep bed profile, tidal exposure and current running across the approach, and the structure has to remain usable across the whole water-level range.
Questions to settle before you specify
- What is the water-level range, and does the pontoon remain usable and afloat at the bottom of it?
- Will it ground, and is it designed to take that load without damage?
- What vessel sizes use the ramp, and what impact loading does that imply?
- How is the pontoon restrained given a shallow, sloping, possibly rocky bed?
- What happens at peak, when several boats want the same structure?
What to put in the RFQ
- Impact and abrasion resistance at the berthing face, with replaceable rubbing strips.
- Grounding behaviour stated explicitly — designed to ground, or not permitted to.
- Restraint suited to the bed conditions, with the geotechnical basis named.
- Public-use detailing: no trip hazards, no finger traps, surface suited to wet bare feet.
- A maintenance and inspection regime the asset owner can actually resource.
Where ramp facilities go wrong
- The pontoon is high and dry, or hard aground, for part of every tide.
- Impact protection is decorative rather than structural, and the first season removes it.
- Restraint is designed for a soft bed that the site does not have.
- Public loading is treated like private loading, and the structure degrades quickly.
Questions buyers ask
Who is responsible for a public ramp pontoon?
Usually the asset owner — a council, a waterway manager or a port authority — but tenure and management arrangements vary by site. Confirm who owns, approves and maintains the structure before design begins.
Can a floating pontoon work at a very tidal ramp?
It can, but only if the water-level range is the starting point of the design. Length, restraint, gangway gradient and grounding behaviour all follow from it.
