Rowing shells require very low freeboard and a long smooth edge. Kayak facilities may use transfer benches, handrails, launch channels or accessible loading systems.
Prioritise low roll response, heel-friendly decking, minimal protrusions and sufficient length for regatta traffic. A stable but high marina pontoon may be functionally unsuitable.
What changes for rowing and paddle craft
Everything about this class is driven by the boat sitting almost at water level. A rowing shell is long, light, fragile and boarded from a kneeling or seated position, so the pontoon has to be low, smooth and free of anything that can catch a rigger or hole a hull.
Traffic pattern is the other driver. A squad launches and lands in waves, often in poor light, and a facility that works for one crew fails when five arrive together.
Questions to settle before you specify
- What craft are used, and what is the maximum hull length that must come alongside without overhanging into traffic?
- What freeboard suits boarding each craft type, and can one platform serve all of them?
- How many crews use it simultaneously at peak, and how much edge length does that need?
- Are there protrusions — cleats, fittings, fasteners, edge trim — anywhere a rigger or hull can strike?
- Is the surface safe for bare feet, wet, in the dark?
What to put in the RFQ
- Freeboard at the boarding edge, stated as a figure, with the craft it was set for.
- A continuous, smooth, protrusion-free edge along the boarding face, detailed explicitly.
- Deck surface suited to bare feet and wet use, with a defined replacement path.
- Roll and pitch response discussed, not just static stability.
- Handrails, transfer benches or accessible launch aids where the club's membership needs them.
Where these facilities go wrong
- A standard marina module is supplied, and it is far too high to board a shell from.
- Cleats and fittings are installed along the boarding edge because they are standard.
- The platform is stable under load but lively when empty, so it moves as crews step on.
- Length is sized for one crew, and the facility jams at peak.
Questions buyers ask
Why can't a normal pontoon be used for rowing?
Freeboard. A marina pontoon is set at a height that suits boarding a cruiser, which is far above the gunwale of a rowing shell. The result is difficult, unsafe boarding and damaged boats.
Does a low pontoon feel less stable?
Low freeboard and stability are separate properties. A low platform can be made stable through waterplane area and mass; the design question is how it responds to a person stepping onto the edge, which is worth asking the builder to explain.
